13 steps for feeling wonderful at work!

Sitting for hours working on your computer or laptop takes a toll on one’s health and posture. Human beings were not designed for prolonged sitting and if you keep drained throughout the day, then maybe your chair and workstation area needs to be specifically aligned.

A few changes here and there and you will notice how a simple adjustment like seat height and back tilt adjustment can do wonders to your posture, relieving stress on your back muscles and spinal structure. When sitting in an office chair for a long period, the natural tendency for most people is to slouch over and this causes strain on the spine, neck and shoulder muscles, resulting in fatigue.

Back Pain at Work

Rely on these simple points to feel good and experience a change in your posture and overall mood!

  1. Sit up with your back straight and your shoulders back. Your buttocks should touch the back of your chair.
  2. Bend your knees at a right angle and keep them even with or slightly higher than your hips (a footrest can be used).
  3. Do not cross your legs and keep your feet flat on the floor.
  4. Remember to keep moving about on your seat.
  5. When sitting on an ergonomic chair that rolls and pivots, don’t twist at the waist while sitting. Instead, turn your whole body.
  6. Adjust your chair height so you can sit up close to your work and tilt it up at you. Rest your elbows and arms on your office chair or desk, keeping your shoulders relaxed.
  7. Take a break after every 50-60 minutes and walk at least 20 steps during each break.
  8. Lean backward regularly in order to minimize pressure on your intervertebral discs. Doing a few neck exercises helps relieves the strain off your lower back and neck muscles.
  9. Maintain a good sitting position and use an ergonomic chair which provides plenty of lumbar support.
  10. The top of your computer screen should be slightly below or at the eye level.
  11. Keep your shoulder straight, your ears should be in the same line as the shoulders.
  12. Blink often to reduce strain on eyes. Every now and then look far off for 20 seconds. Try this, it is highly relaxing.
  13. Use an office chair with adjustment mechanisms that are accessible from the sitting position. Invest in office chairs wisely and choose those which have logical, intuitive and easy to operate adjustment mechanisms.
